What is Sandplay Therapy?

Sandplay therapy is literally playing with figures or miniatures in a tray of sand, creating a world within the tray to reflect what is going on inside us.

  • No experience is needed – I will guide you through the process.
  • It doesn’t have to be instead of talking-it complements the talking.
  • Many of my clients do one-off or occasional sand trays.
  • Others create them regularly to help them explore their family relationships, work situations, grief, loss and trauma as well as their joys, strengths, resources and supports.

Who is Sandplay therapy for?

  • If you find talking about the important things in your life difficult or overwhelming.
  • When you find it hard to give an answer when asked how you’re feeling.
  • If you’ve tried talking therapy and found it lacking.

Sometimes a first reaction  to Sandplay is “that’s a bit weird” or “that’s not for me.” If I am honest, that’s what I thought!

So it’s always only an option for you to try- there’s no judgement if it doesn’t feel right for you.

Testimonial to the role of Sandplay in therapy:

“ When my Therapist suggested I make use of sandtray I was immediately sceptical, how could placing objects in a tray of sand help me more deeply understand myself and my life??? But I thought I would ‘give it a go’ & I was amazed at how the unconscious part/s of me began to communicate through the objects I chose to put into the sandtray and their placement. It was – for me – life changing and an experience I am still grateful for, some 10 years on…”

What can Sandplay therapy do for me?

  • Allows the expression of feelings that you find difficult to put into words.
  • Allows you to work through difficult feelings without saying the words or reliving the event.
  • Allows you to get things ‘out of your head’ and into the safe confines of the tray, so you can look at things from a different perspective.
  • Offers an alternative for those of us who are good at thinking our way through problems.
  • It’s fun.

My training and experience is in Integrative Sandplay, (with Masha Bennett at The Sand and Sound Centre). This allows me to tailor sand sessions to you: I ask questions if it helps you, or not if it doesn’t, and you can tell me as much or as little about your tray as you are comfortable with.

Please Note, all photos are of my own sandtrays, no client work is used.
